After a week of rain followed by freezing temperatures, an early Sunday morning pitch inspection revealed a perfect surface for a game of rugby. This is testimony to the excellent work undertaken by the club’s volunteer ground maintenance members.
With RDVC sitting 2nd top of the league and unbeaten prior to kick off and the home team lying 3rd top with only one loss, this match was important to both teams and that was illustrated by their commitment to attacking play right from the start.
It was the Stagettes who opened the scoring with a strong run from the half way line down the left wing by Sonia Alloway-Mudd for a 5-0 lead. A strong run by Susan Nicholson took the score to 10-0 before RDVC opened their account with an unconverted try. This was followed by a barnstorming run by Sonia Connolly who scored near the posts with a conversion by Georgia Henderson giving a half time score of 17-5 for the home team. Following some substitutions for the 2nd half, Sonia again broke through the visiting defence before off-loading to a supporting Jen Cram who ran in for a try between the posts, converted by Rhonwyn Spence and this gave the Stagettes a try bonus point. RDVC fought back to score again with a converted try to take the score to 24-12 and they were clearly not giving up without a fight.
The local team now upped their game and scored two further tries. Firstly with a sprint down the line from her own half, Susan Nicholson scored her 2nd try of the day, converted by Ashley Aitken and then a short range forward drive saw Lorna McDougall emerge as scorer from a pile of bodies. With the score now 36-12 the Stagettes became a bit complacent and allowed the visitors to score 2 late tries not helped by slack kicking and weak defence. This gave the visitors their own try bonus point
However, the team held out for a 36-22 and a 5 point win taking them to 2nd in the league with 5 wins from 6 matches. There is no doubt that the team is beginning to get fitter and play with a greater structure in their play.
Next match is at home on 3rd December to Lismore and all those interested in playing rugby can join training at 7.30 pm on Wednesday’s at Glensburgh.
