Grangemouth Stags 22 Harris Academy FP 13

Harris were the visitors to Glensburgh last Saturday for week 10 of the league programme. The Dundee side had narrowly won the previous fixture between the clubs on the opening Saturday of the season. Grangemouth were able to welcome back a number of players from injury and unavailability with skipper McInally, the McFarlane twins, Brough, Mcpherson and Johnstone all returning to the starting line up. The Stags made a poor start and were immediately under pressure in their 22 after failing to deal with the kick off. After 3 minutes Harris were awarded a penalty in front if the posts which somehow the visitors stand off managed to miss. Grangemouth gradually played their way into the game and scored after 9 minutes. After taking play to just inside the Harris 22, Connor McFarlane secured a lineout and the forwards set up a driving maul which took play up to the goal line where Jamieson flopped over the line for the unconverted score. Harris replied a few minutes later with a penalty for offside. The Stags were soon back on the attack and after a lineout penalty David McFarlane had a run before Jamieson was somehow held up over the line. The big man was not to be denied and from the scrum Neill picked up, Aspinall carried the ball on before Jamieson collected the pop pass to score. Once again the conversion was missed. Grangemouth continued to press and Harris were given a yellow card as they continued to give away penalties at the breakdown. On 28 minutes Jamieson was held up over the line again. However from a quickly taken free kick David McFarlane crashed over under the posts. This time Johnstone was successful with the conversion. With 5 minutes left in the half the Stags scored the bonus point try. From a heel against the head on the 10 metre line McFarlane picked up and slipped the pass to McPherson who beat the cover defence to race in at the corner. With the last play of the half Harris kicked a penalty to leave the half time score 22 – 6.

With the bonus point secured the second half was very disappointing for the home crowd. Grangemouth dominated the opening 10 minutes but were unable to add to their lead. Harris began to run the ball from all areas and only a great covering tackle by Connor McFarlane prevented the visitors from scoring. On the other wing Denny had a thumping tackle on his opposite man as Grangemouth continued to defend. On the hour mark a clearance kick from Parsons was collected by the Harris full back and he powered past some poor attempted tackles to score under the posts. Grangemouth finished the game on the attack but were unable to break down the Harris defence. A penalty kick at goal was missed and Ward was held up just short of the line. In the closing minutes Innes and Allan combined but once again the Stags were denied. Just on the final whistle the Harris hooker was given a red card for remarks to the referee. Final score 22 – 13

The Stags were happy with the bonus point victory but disappointed by their failure to score in the second half. The leagues now take a three week break during the autumn internationals. Next Saturday the Stags are at home against Blairgowrie in the Midland Bowl with a 1.30 KO, while the seconds travel to Stirling to take on Stirling 3rds BGH in their last league game before the split.
