Grangemouth made the trip to Fintry last Saturday to take part in the Strathendrick Sevens. The Stags fielded a very young squad including four of the current under 18s, with only ‘old man’ Gary Dempsey over 21. Nine teams entered and were split into three leagues of three. Grangemouth opened with a game against McLaren and struggled to get into the tie going behind to an early try. However two scores from skipper Mncube turned the tie as Grangemouth won 14 – 5. In the second game in the group Grangemouth were much better as they defeated Stirling County 21 – 0. The Stags topped the group and moved into the second phase of group winners to compete for the cup. First up the Stags played against the home side and were quickly down by two scores. However they fought back with a try of their own to leave the score at 14 – 7 at half time. In the second half Grangemouth dominated the territory but couldn’t score and in the last minute Strahendrick broke up field to seal the tie 19 – 7. In their final game Grangemouth had an epic struggle against Hillfoots which was locked at 14 all before the Stags collected a loose lineout for the winning score.
The Stags therefore finished in overall 2nd spot in the tournament and were unlucky not to defeat Strathendrick in the crucial match. This was a very encouraging performance by the young Grangemouth side who will gain in confidence and experience in the next few weeks. This weekend the under 18s play a sevens at Dunfemline on Saturday while the seniors go to Stirling County on Sunday.
