The 2nds travelled to Dundee to take on Morgan in their Midland 3 fixture. On a bright but breezy afternoon the Stags had the advantage of the wind in the first half. The early exchanges were fairly equal but Grangemouth were first on the scoreboard after 8 minutes. From an attacking lineout Scott made the initial break. The ball was quickly recycled and Stangoe angled his run to cut through the defence for a converted score. Morgan hit back and scored their first try on 15 minutes. A clean break by their centre took play up to the Stags 22 and when he was tackled the ball was moved wide to the winger who squeezed in at the corner for an unconverted score. The home side then took the lead as the game entered the second quarter. The referee missed a clear knock on as the home player jumped to prevent a kick going into touch. The ball was moved across the park and good support play saw the centre collect the final pass to run round under the posts for the score.Grangemouth were next on the scoreboard to retake the lead. They secured a scrum against the head and took play up to the 22. Hind was up in support to collect the pass and run in under the posts for the score. Denny added the extras. The end to end play continued and Morgan added their 3rd try following a kick downfield which pinned the Stags in their 22. The home side reclaimed the ball and were driven over from close range for an unconverted score. With half time approaching a loose pass on halfway by the home side was picked up by Noble. He made ground before passing to Hind who in turn released his winger Downie to run in near the corner. Denny was unable to add the conversion. HT Morgan 17 Stags 2nds 19.
Grangemouth made a good start to the second period. After receiving the kick off the forwards made a series of drives to take play up to halfway. Denny fired a speculative kick towards the home 22 and a wicked bounce saw Scott collect the ball and with a hint of a dummy run in for the score. Once again the conversion attempt was off target. A few minutes later the scores were tied with a bonus point score for the home side. A missed tackle allowed an easy run in for a converted score. Grangemouth were now well on top at the scrum and it was no surprise when their next score came from a pushover with Scott collecting his second try. On the hour mark a rampaging run from Brough saw the hooker burst through several attempted tackles to run in under the posts from 30 metres. This time the conversion was good. With 10 minutes to play a clever offload by Clyne was fielded by Shannon. He kicked ahead and Denny followed up for the score. Straight from the kick off Hind collected and broke upfield. Collins was in support to take play inside the home 22 before McLay collected the final pass for the score. The closing few minutes saw good handling by the home side result in a try in the corner. Then some neat interplay saw Whitelaw collect the scoring pass. With the final play the home forwards were driven over in the corner for the final try. FT Morgan 38 Grangemouth 2nds 55
This was a good performance by the seconds in a very high scoring and entertaining game. There was a man of the match performance from Brough while Taylor and Downie showed up well in the backs. The 2nds next league fixture is on 12 October when they play Montrose at Glensburgh.
