The Stags welcomed Blairgowrie to Glensburgh on Saturday for the latest round of league fixtures. Both sides were unbeaten and a tough match was expected. Grangemouth made 3 changes in personnel and 2 positional switches in their starting lineup. Up front Clark was back at prop, Jackson in at lock with Strathie switching to back row. In the backs Wieczorek was in at scrum half with Forsyth moving to the wing. On a perfect day for rugby Grangemouth kicked off and scored almost immediately. Venter reclaimed the ball from the kick off. The backs moved the play wide and Forsyth was able to force his way over in the corner. Stanley slotted the difficult conversion from near the right touchline. The Stags continued to attack and added their second score a few minutes later. Johnny Venter made the break and when he was stopped just short of the line he popped the pass to Clark to dive over for the score. Stanley added the extras. The home side remained on top. Strathie was halted close to the line and when the ball was recycled Johnny Venter was able to beat the final defender for the score. Once again Stanley was on target with the conversion. Grangemouth seemed to switch off at the kick off and this allowed Blair a spell in the Stags 22. The defence seemed to be holding but a cross field kick and a couple of wicked bounces saw the Blair winger score an unconverted try in the corner. As the game entered the second quarter the home side were back on the attack. Andrew Venter had another fine run and after several phases close to the line the ball reached Johnny Venter who crossed for an unconverted score. On the half hour mark Andrew Venter made another break before drawing the fullback and passing back inside for Stanley to score. The young fullback converted his own try. With halftime approaching Blairgowrie launched a counter attack and another speculative kick bounced kindly for the visitors who were able to scamper in under the sticks. HT Stags 33 Blairgowrie 12.
Straight from the kick off the Grangemouth backs moved the ball wide. Andrew Venter burst up the touchline and he again found Stanley in support for his second try. Once again the conversion was successful. The Stags were guilty of losing the ball in contact and this allowed Blair another spell of pressure in the home 22. They seemed to be stopped on the line but eventually managed to force their way over their third score. The closing quarter saw the Stags dominate and they were rewarded with 4 further trys. First a lineout drive made 20 metres and when the maul was halted the ball was moved wider to give Kerr an easy run in. Then from the kick off another sweeping attack from deep was finished off by Sikora. Next up another burst from Sikora and good handling by the backs saw McCormack race 40 metres up the touchline for a try. Finally Stewart and Watson combined to take play into the visitors 22 and the final pass was collected by Wieczorek for an easy run in. Stanley converted all 4 scores. FT Stags 68 Blairgowrie 19.
This was another excellent team performance from the Stags. The platform was set by the pack who dominated the scrums, while Luke Quinn secured plenty of quality lineout possession. In the loose Watson, Sikora and Geldenhuys left defenders in their wake with numerous strong carries. The backs looked sharp with ball in hand with the Venter brothers a constant threat. There are still areas to work on including receiving kick offs and ball retention in contact. Luke Quinn was given man of the match for his efforts in the lineout. Next up the Stags reach the halfway point in the league programme as they travel to Alloa with KO 3pm.
